Dec.17, 2014 Running a business is a bit like gambling in Vegas; the odds are in the house’s favor. The house for business owners case? Only half of all new establishments survive five years or more and about one-third survive ten years or more according to the SBA.
So what does this have to do with truth?
We have found most business owners do not like to hear it. The main two culprits are: being too emotionally attached to their company, and the second is refusing to give up the reigns.
The first culprit we at Morning Sock are guilty of ourselves. Which is why when we handle major marketing decisions for our company such as website redesigns or ad campaigns, we must step back and hand over the reigns to a non-partial third party.
It is no different from a surgeon that must put his trust in another surgeon’s hands should they need surgery themselves. That leads us to second culprit, which is giving up the reigns. The reason it is so hard for most business owners is they yet to find a company they can trust to communicate their brand on a level their consumer will listen to.
That leads them to try to cut costs in their advertising in order to save money. As Henry Ford so eloquently put it “A man who stops advertising to save money is like a man who stops a clock to save time.”
